For many young adults, moving into adulthood is often associated with getting a job, building a career and becoming financially independent. But for young adults with complex needs, including physical disabilities, learning disabilities, autism or mental health challenges, traditional employment may not always be possible or the right pathway.
That does not mean they cannot have a meaningful, fulfilling and purposeful life.
Everyone needs to feel valued. Everyone needs opportunities to develop their skills, connect with others and spend time doing things that bring them joy.
Why meaning and purpose matter
Having a sense of purpose gives our lives direction. It helps us feel that we belong, that we have something to contribute and that our strengths are recognised. For young adults with additional needs, opportunities to experience achievement and connection can have a huge impact on confidence and wellbeing.
Purpose does not have to come from a job. It can come from:
Learning a new skill
Helping others
Being part of a community
Developing friendships
Pursuing interests and hobbies
Taking on responsibilities
Achieving personal goals
The important question is: "What makes this person feel valued and fulfilled?"
Employment is only one route to contribution
For some young adults, employment will be an important goal. With the right adjustments and support, many can thrive in the workplace.
This might include:
Supported employment opportunities
Assisted workplaces
Apprenticeships or training programmes
Roles with adapted responsibilities
Flexible working arrangements
However, employment is not the only way someone can contribute. A person's value is not measured by whether they have a paid job.
The importance of volunteering
Volunteering can provide many of the benefits of employment without some of the pressures.
It can help young adults:
Develop confidence
Learn new skills
Build relationships
Experience achievement
Feel part of something bigger
Explore their interests
Volunteering opportunities could include helping at a charity shop, supporting community groups, caring for animals, helping at local events or contributing skills in a way that feels meaningful to them.

Hobbies are more than just something to do
A hobby is so much more than something to pass the time, it can provide:
Connection – meeting people who share similar interests.
Achievement – learning, improving and reaching personal goals.
Enjoyment – experiencing moments of happiness and fulfilment.
Identity – being recognised for who someone is, not just the support they need.
Whether it is art, music, sport, gaming, gardening, cooking, photography or something completely different, interests help people express themselves and build confidence.
Helping young adults discover what matters to them
Good support is not simply to keep someone safe. It should help them explore possibilities. A good support provider should take time to understand:
What makes them happy?
What are their interests?
What skills would they like to develop?
What experiences would they like to try?
What gives their life meaning?
How families can encourage purpose and a sense of meaning
Families can discover what brings fulfilment by:
Encouraging interests and passions
Celebrating achievements, however small
Creating opportunities to try new things
Supporting friendships and community connections
Looking beyond limitations and focusing on strengths
Sometimes the biggest successes come from small steps. Trying a new activity, attending a group for the first time or learning a new skill can be the beginning of something life-changing.
