Welcome to our Advice for Families series. Through these short videos, we share practical advice, common challenges, and helpful insights to support families as they navigate ageing, wellbeing, independence, and care & support at home.
In this video, Chris Gage, Co-founder of Thrive Homecare, discusses one of the most common emotions families experience when considering support for a parent, partner, or relative: guilt.
Many family members find themselves trying to do everything alone.
Whether you're supporting an ageing parent, a partner with health challenges, or another family member, it's natural to want to be there for the person you love. However, taking on increasing responsibilities can often leave family members feeling physically and emotionally exhausted.
Support Benefits the Whole Family
Many people assume that care & support is only about helping the person receiving it.
In reality, the right support can benefit the entire family. It can reduce stress, ease pressure, provide reassurance, and allow family members to spend more meaningful time together rather than focusing solely on practical tasks and responsibilities.
Support can also help protect relationships by ensuring family members can continue being daughters, sons, husbands, wives, partners, and friends, rather than feeling they must be a nurse, a cook or a PA.
It's OK to Ask for Help
No one is expected to carry everything on their own.
Seeking support doesn't mean stepping away. It means building a team around the person you love, helping them maintain their wellbeing, independence, and quality of life while ensuring family members receive the support they need too.
At Thrive Homecare, we often remind families that asking for help is not about giving up responsibility. It's about sharing responsibility in a way that benefits everyone.
If feelings of guilt are preventing you from exploring support, we encourage you to have a conversation and learn about the options available. Sometimes simply understanding what's possible can make a huge difference.
