Welcome to our Advice for Families series. Through these short videos, we share practical advice, common challenges, and helpful insights to support families as they navigate ageing, wellbeing, independence, and care & support at home.
In this video, Chris Gage, Co-founder of Thrive Homecare, discusses why waiting for a crisis can create unnecessary stress for families, and why exploring support options earlier often leads to better outcomes for everyone involved.
One of the most common things we hear from families is:
"We want to manage for as long as possible before bringing in support."
While this is completely understandable, waiting until support becomes urgent can often create unnecessary stress for everyone involved.
Planning vs Waiting for a Crisis
The best time to start thinking about homecare is often when things are still going well.
When families begin conversations early, there is time to build trust, establish relationships and plan support around the person's preferences and goals. This creates a much smoother experience than trying to make important decisions during a period of stress or uncertainty.
Early support can help:
Maintain independence for longer.
Reduce pressure on family members.
Build trusting relationships gradually.
Protect wellbeing and quality of life.
Avoid rushed decisions during a crisis.
At Thrive Homecare, we often speak with families who aren't ready for support today but want to understand their options for the future. Having those conversations early can provide reassurance and help everyone feel more prepared.
If you're starting to wonder whether support may be beneficial in the coming months, we'd be happy to have a no obligation conversation.
