How Can I Stay at Home for as Long as Possible?

For many people, one of the biggest worries about getting older is having to leave their own home. Perhaps you’ve started to wonder:

“How can I make sure I can stay at home for as long as possible?”

It’s a good question to ask before you actually need care. And you don’t have to work out the answer on your own.

Sometimes, an outside perspective can make all the difference

As we get older, small changes can gradually make life at home more difficult.

Perhaps your mobility isn’t what it used to be. You’re finding the garden harder to manage. You’re less confident going out alone. Your memory isn’t quite as reliable. Or your family live some distance away and are starting to worry about you living alone.

None of these things necessarily mean you need care. But they might be signs that it’s worth looking at your situation and thinking about what could make life easier.

Having an independent person to talk things through with can help. Someone who understands the challenges in later life, knows what support is available and can look at the bigger picture with you.

You don't have to wait until you need care

One of the reasons people can find later life decisions difficult is that they only start looking at their options when something has already gone wrong.

A fall. A hospital admission. A new diagnosis.

At that point, decisions can feel urgent and choices can seem limited.

Planning earlier gives you more time to understand your options and decide what would work for you.

Sometimes, the answer might be surprisingly simple.

  • A few changes around the home like a handrail or a walk-in shower.

  • Some practical help with the housework and shopping.

  • A local transport service to help you get to the GP or see friends.

  • Or simply knowing what support is available and how to finance it.

This is where independent advice can help

At Thrive, our Later Life Advice & Support service is designed for people who may not need care, but want to understand how they can continue living well and independently at home. We can talk through your circumstances, concerns and priorities, and help you understand the options available. The aim isn't to arrange care. It's to help you remain independent for as long as possible.

And because we're part of the care and wellbeing sector, we understand what different types of support can look like, when they might be useful and what alternatives may be available. That means you can have an honest conversation about what's worrying you, with no obligation to use our services.

What might we talk about?

It could be anything that is concerning you:

  • How you could continue managing safely at home

  • Changes to your mobility or confidence

  • Making your home easier to manage

  • Keeping socially connected

  • Maintaining routines and the things you enjoy

  • What to do if your needs change

  • What support is available locally

  • What you might want to put in place now, before it becomes urgent

There isn't a standard answer because everyone's circumstances are different.

The important thing is having the opportunity to talk it through.

Planning isn't giving up your independence

In fact, it can be the opposite. The earlier you understand your options, the more opportunity you have to make decisions on your own terms. You can decide what you're comfortable with, what you don't want and what would make life at home easier.

And if you don't need any additional support right now, that's absolutely fine.

Sometimes the most useful outcome of a conversation is simply knowing you've got a plan if things change.

You don't need care to ask for advice

If you're wondering how you or someone you love can continue living independently at home, a conversation with someone who understands can be a good place to start. Our Later Life Advice Service starts with a face-to-face consultation where we discuss your concerns and deliver a written report with our recommendations. For many people this is enough and they go on to arrange any practical support needed themselves. If you want ongoing support we also have options for regular check-ins.
