Jack* and his wife were living together at home. But daily life was becoming a struggle as his wife's dementia progressed and his mobility had become more limited. After his wife had spent some time in hospital, Jack needed short-term support at home. We stepped in to provide practical household help and companionship during a very vulnerable period.

Challenge
Jack struggled with poor mobility and found everyday tasks such as cleaning, washing and ironing physically demanding. When his wife returned home from hospital, still physically active, she wanted to go out, which left Jack exhausted and anxious.
Approach
Our support began with practical home help — laundry, ironing and light household tasks — alongside gentle companionship. As Jack grew more comfortable, our associate encouraged routines that supported both Jack and his wife, such as taking her out for short walks so Jack could rest while she gained exercise.
When his wife passed away, we continued to support Jack emotionally and practically, helping him to arrange the funeral. Jack also engaged with physiotherapy, and over time his mobility improved. Support shifted from regular visits to occasional assistance, with Jack often completing tasks himself. They even worked together as a team, such as bringing logs in for the fire.
Our associate always paid close attention to the details Jack cared about, such as ironing his pyjamas neatly, which respected his preference for order and tidiness and strengthened their relationship.
Outcome
Jack regained confidence and independence. His mobility improved, he managed more tasks on his own, and he appreciated the respectful, calm support he received. The relationship built trust and stability during a difficult time, helping him to adjust after his wife’s death while feeling supported rather than dependent.
