Please note we have changed names to protect privacy.

Antonio is in his 80s and lives alone in his own home in Kent. Originally from Italy, he has always taken great pride in his independence and enjoys preparing his own meals, maintaining a strong connection to his heritage through cooking.

Having previously worked as a tour guide in Canterbury, Antonio remains passionate about history and enjoys sharing stories from his life and knowledge of the city. He values the friendships he has built over the years and enjoys staying connected to those around him.

The Challenge

As Antonio's mobility became more limited, everyday tasks such as shopping, housekeeping and personal care started to become more challenging. Despite this, he was clear that he wanted to remain living in his own home, continue making his own decisions and maintain the routines that were important to him.

Our Approach

From the outset, Thrive Homecare focused on understanding what mattered most to Antonio. Through conversations and a wellbeing assessment, we learned that respecting his privacy, personal preferences and cultural identity would be essential to building trust. Rather than taking over tasks, our goal was to provide support alongside him, helping him continue living life on his own terms.

Antonio was carefully matched with Katie, a consistent Health & Wellbeing Associate whose calm, respectful approach suited his personality and preferences. Antonio now receives support three mornings each week. During visits, Katie provides assistance with personal care, housekeeping, laundry, changing bedding, food checks and shopping.

Attention to the small details has played an important role in helping Antonio remain safe and comfortable at home. Support has included checking food supplies, maintaining a clean home environment, encouraging fresh air circulation and discussing home aids that could make everyday life easier.

As Antonio's needs changed, Thrive also identified opportunities to improve safety within his home. Following discussions about his mobility, a bathroom renovation was recommended, including the installation of a walk in shower and handrails. These adaptations have since been completed, helping Antonio continue using his home with greater confidence.

Importantly, Antonio continues to manage his own medication, make his own decisions and remain in control of his daily routines. His support is also shaped around the things that bring meaning to his life. He continues to cook his own meals, shop for the ingredients he enjoys using and maintain important connections to his Italian heritage and personal identity.

The Outcome

With the right support in place, Antonio has been able to continue living independently in the home he loves while maintaining control over the life he wants to lead. The support has helped create a safer home environment, improved confidence around daily living and reduced the worry associated with managing household tasks alone. The bathroom adaptations have provided greater safety and comfort, while regular support has ensured that any concerns can be identified and addressed early.

Just as importantly, Antonio has developed a trusted relationship with Katie. By taking time to understand him as a person, rather than focusing solely on tasks, Thrive has helped create support that feels respectful, empowering and tailored to his individual needs. Today, Antonio continues to enjoy cooking, sharing stories about Canterbury's history, maintaining friendships and making his own choices about how he spends his time. He remains connected to his culture, his interests and the routines that matter most to him.
