Valerie now lives in a care home and although she faces physical limitations, she remains a vibrant, social person who enjoys getting out and experiencing life. We have been supporting her for several years, providing companionship and opportunities to connect with the world beyond the care home.

Challenge
Valerie struggled with feeling confined and disconnected in the care home. She repeatedly expressed a desire to “go home” or simply get out. Social interaction and new experiences enable her to thrive. Being in a care setting limited her opportunities to go out, and her medical needs meant that any excursions required careful planning, specialist support and a companion she trusted.
Approach
We focused on enabling Valerie to enjoy the things that mattered to her. Through companionship, we support her with regular outings, from garden centres and local cafes to exploring the history at Canterbury Cathedral, we always take her lead on where to go. Each outing strengthens her sense of identity, autonomy and joy.
Because Valerie dreamed of one last holiday, the team worked closely with her solicitor, family and care home to organise a trip that met her medical needs. We helped her to choose a destination, pack her case, prepare for the journey and select a carer she felt comfortable with.
Outcome
Valerie became happier and more settled in her care home because she had regular opportunities to go out and socialise. She continues to enjoy excursions twice a week, maintaining her connection to the community and a sense of adventure.
The support she receives enables her to live life with energy and enjoyment rather than feeling “stuck" or confined. Companionship and thoughtful planning has resulted in experiences that have brought Valerie genuine pleasure.
