Looking for a slower pace of life, Duncan and his wife relocated from London to a seaside apartment, enjoying the views of the Kent coast. Over time, however, Duncan’s health deteriorated, and he began to require support with daily activities and wasn’t able to get out and enjoy his seaside location.

The Challenge

When we met Duncan and his wife, they were already receiving visits from another care company twice a day. But it was becoming clear that was not enough and Duncan was not able to get out much during the day. He longed for simple pleasures such as a bus ride or lunch out and whilst he felt increasingly isolated, his wife was finding it more difficult to support him.

Our Approach

We worked closely with the family to design a flexible, tailored visiting care plan. We introduced a male Health & Wellbeing Associate who was a good match for Duncan. This provided him with the daily support he needed, and male company alongside the mostly female support he already had from family.

The support focused on:

  • Practical support, such as getting dressed, showering, assistance with toileting, and mobility

  • Daytime companionship and stimulation, including trips to the seaside, cafés, cinema, local shops, and even bus rides

  • Facilitating family time, ensuring Duncan and his wife could enjoy moments together, including organised lunch outings

  • Encouraging engagement with activities, such as showing Duncan how to use technology at home

  • Flexibility and continuity, ensuring care was consistent and adapted to Duncan’s preferences

The plan prioritised Duncan’s dignity, independence, and choice, creating a supportive environment that went beyond routine care.

The Outcome

Duncan’s visiting care resulted in enhanced quality of life and meaningful companionship:

  • He was able to go out and explore the local area with his carer by his side

  • He enjoyed social interaction and emotional support from a consistent, trusted carer

  • His wife was able to step back and focus on her own wellbeing, knowing Duncan was safe, supported, and stimulated

  • The family experienced peace of mind, with continuity of care and personalised attention

Duncan thrived with the relationship-led approach, enjoying activities and company that enriched his day-to-day life, while his wife could balance her own life with the reassurance that Duncan was supported.
