Penny*, a beloved member of her village, faced the challenge of moving to a new care home due to her complex dementia. Through our companionship service, we helped Penny rediscover moments of joy and comfort in her new surroundings.

The Challenge

Penny had spent many years in her village, surrounded by familiar faces and places. The move to a new care home was a significant change, leaving her feeling unsettled. She missed her old home and found it difficult to connect with her new environment, which added to her feelings of unease.

Our Approach

We reached out to Penny's close friend to learn about her likes and dislikes, ensuring our approach was tailored to her preferences.

Respect and dignity were at the core of our interactions. For example, we always knocked on her door and waited for her permission to enter, fostering a sense of control and respect.

Understanding the importance of familiar surroundings, we decorated her room with photos of her previous home, brought in her favourite ornaments and made practical adjustments so that it worked for her.

We then introduced pet therapy sessions and listed to Mozart together, which brought tears of joy to Penny's eyes, sparking happy memories.

We were there for her in every moment, from helping to settle in at her new care home, until she reached the end of life – sitting with her and holding her hand.

The Outcome

  • Happiness and Connection: Penny experienced genuine moments of happiness and connection, particularly through music and pet therapy.

  • Comfortable and Settled: She gradually became more comfortable and settled into her new home.

  • Security and Companionship: A deep, trusting relationship was built, providing Penny with a sense of security and companionship.

  • Peace of Mind for Her Friend: Penny's friend found solace in knowing she was receiving compassionate and personalised care.

Positive Feedback

Richard* (a friend of Penny): "I have found the care provider to be highly efficient in the care and detail of care they provide to my long-term friend in a care home. The companion has provided my friend with numerous memories and products to assist with her home comforts and that has gone a long way to her feeling safe and well in her new surroundings."
